Abstract
The duration of pregnancy and the weight of the newborn are of importance in the prognostic evaluation of the neonate. It has been recently well-known that Small for Gestational Age-Infants (S.G.A.I) carry higher frequency of morbidity including physical and mental retardation than the normal neonates. The mean value of body weight and its percentile curve for gestational ages of 2,406 neonates born in the Han gang Sung Sim Hospital, School of Medicine, Chung-Ang University, were obtained by the study of 3 years extending january 1, 1973 to December 31, 1975. The 283 cases of S.G.A.I. belonging under the group less than the 10th percentile were retrospectively persued for the etiologic factors with the following results of the statistical evaluation. 1. In 2,406 cases of delivery, the number of S.G.A.I. was 283 cases(11.76%). 2. The frequency of S.G.A.I. was higher in the female infants than the male. 3. The frequency of S.G.A.I. was much higher in either elder or younger age group than in the 30-34 year-old age group of primipara and 25-29 year old age group of multipara. 4. In the comparison of the level of maternal hemoglobin, there was no significant difference between mother of S.G.A.I. group and control group. 5. In the comparison of the Apgar score, there were significantly lower points in S.G.A.I. group than control group at 1 minute after birth. 6. The placental weight of S.G.A.I. was generally lighter than one of the control group. 7. In the comparison of the height and weight of the parents, only those of the mother had significant relationship with weight of fetus. 8. Significantly high incidence of S.G.A.I. was found in eclampsia and severe preeclampsia in the antenatal obstetric diseases.
